Though the panel was over, the second day of the convention proved to be just as busy and interesting for attending Metal Gear fans. After having slept in, I quickly ran the half mile distance between the hotel and convention center, to make it in time for the photo shoot. In the front lobby by the fountain, many other groups were already doing their own shoots and a group of Metal Gear cosplayers were waiting their turn off to the side.
By the time we were allowed our chance to use the spot, we had already attracted a large level of attention from other con-goers, including several other photographers. We were able to take some group shots, a few action shots, and plenty of humorous ones. The cosplayers were more than willing to pose and show off their costumes to the growing crowd.
Once we had finished the photo shoot, a group of Snakes and I decided to travel around the city a bit. Sneaking around corners, we gained the attention of many a passer by. And being a city well known for seafood, there were statues of crabs scattered throughout Baltimore which we were more than willing to exploit for a cheap laugh.
Before long, however, everyone had gone their separate ways and though a few people remained to talk about Metal Gear, gaming, politics, and anything else that fit our fancy at the time, there was much more of the convention to experience.
The dealers room was packed with hundreds upon hundreds of attendees, and there was nary a good deal in sight. Items were expensive, but beautiful, and I even found myself drooling over a “Real Action Heroes” twelve-inch Naked Snake figurine (Crocodile Head edition) that was for sale by one of the vendors. Eventually, after spending several minutes in discussion with a Snatcher fan (who looked curiously like Tim Rogers of Insert Credit fame) and his posse, I caved in and bought the ComicCon special edition kubrick of Cold War Camouflage Naked Snake.
Unfortunately, we found ourselves strapped for cash at this point, and with our food supply running thin, the situation was becoming worrisome. However, thanks to the generosity of a fellow Metal Gear fan (and the sale of my copy of “The Document of MGS2”), we were able to enjoy a Chinese food dinner that evening. By this point, it was already getting late, and after attending the 1:00AM 4-chan panel, we were again ready for a good night’s sleep.
The final day of the convention was relatively inactive, when compared to the previous two days. Short events, such as chatting with a group of SomethingAwful goons, laughing at over-obsessive Piano Squall fangirls, and playing ball in the front lobby (an event that the convention staff became very upset about), filled our empty schedule. Eventually, the loudspeaker sounded and everyone who was still inside the convention center was escorted out. A taxi-ride and several more painful hours on a Greyhound bus later, we found ourselves back at home.
Overall, the experience was very memorable, and it allowed me the opportunity to not only discuss Metal Gear with a large public audience, but I was also allow me to meet a lot of interesting people, some of whom I am still in contact with. And while making our way to Otakon may have been frustrating, hopefully, TUS will be able to attend many more events of this type in the future.
As for right now, I'm beat.
